Column Eric de Wit: Van Duuren goes intermodal!
In 2013 I became a member of the European Transport Board (ETB), which is a think tank consisting of experts in the European trucking industry. Members come from companies such as DHL, DSV, Schenker, Ewals Cargo Care, P&O Ferrymasters and Van Duuren.
In many of our meetings we discuss the developments of intermodal solutions in Europe. Rail, barge and short-sea solutions in particular show considerable savings in CO2 emissions, depending mostly on distance.
At Van Duuren we care about the environment and we are conscious when taking decisions that have an impact on it. As a result of constructive discussions with some of our full-load clients we have recently started using Lorry-Rail between Luxemburg and Le Boulou, near to the Spanish border. With 2 departures per day in both directions and a very reliable transit time of 23 hours this service is proving to be very efficient. The CO2 reduction is close to 70%. We have also started using rail between Antwerp and Irun, between Holland and Milano and for Scandinavian destinations.
